Exploring South Wales? Add the Carmarthenshire Coast to Your Route

Exploring South Wales? Add the Carmarthenshire Coast to Your Route

South Wales is home to some of Wales’ most beautiful landscapes, historic landmarks, and coastal scenery. But some of the most memorable journeys are not built around a single famous destination. They happen in the spaces between them: a road that follows the coast, a stretch of coastline you had not planned to explore, a long walk beside the sea, a medieval castle at the end of the afternoon, or a café you discovered somewhere along the way and immediately decided you would come back to.

If your journey takes you through South Wales, make time for the Carmarthenshire coast around Llanelli, Burry Port, Pembrey, and Kidwelly. Within a relatively short distance, you can move between coastline, beaches, woodland, historic landmarks, and small towns — without spending the entire day travelling from one place to another.

It works equally well for a South Wales road trip, a weekend away, a family day out, a cycling adventure, or simply a day when you want to discover somewhere new. And perhaps the best thing about this part of Wales is that you do not need an enormous itinerary to enjoy it. You just need to know where to stop.

Start in Llanelli

Llanelli makes a natural starting point for exploring the Carmarthenshire coast. Sitting between Swansea and West Wales, the town is close to the sea and directly connected to one of the area’s greatest attractions: the Millennium Coastal Path. From here, you can head west towards Burry Port, Pembrey, and Kidwelly, or spend time exploring the coastline around Llanelli itself.

And before setting off, there is another important part of any good day out: food.

BRECHDAN is an independent café in Llanelli, welcoming local residents as well as walkers, cyclists, families, day-trippers, and visitors travelling through South Wales. We describe ourselves simply as: BRECHDAN — The Food Specialist.

Our menu is designed to be enjoyed throughout the day, so there is no need to organise your journey around traditional meal times. Come for breakfast before heading towards the coast, meet for brunch before a walk, stop for lunch during a day exploring Carmarthenshire, drop in for speciality coffee, or make BRECHDAN the place where everyone meets before deciding where the day will take you.

From signature waffles and fresh salads to artisan sandwiches, baguettes, and seasonal dishes, the idea is simple: good food should be part of the day, not something you settle for because you happen to be travelling. And once you leave Llanelli, the coast is waiting.

Walk or Cycle the Millennium Coastal Path

The Millennium Coastal Path is one of the easiest ways to understand what makes this part of South Wales special. Following the coastline around Llanelli and Carmarthen Bay, the route opens onto wide skies, sea views, and long stretches of landscape that feel surprisingly far removed from everyday life.

You can walk, cycle, run, or simply choose a short section and take your time — there is no requirement to complete the entire route for it to be worthwhile. For cyclists in particular, Llanelli is a useful starting point for exploring the coast, with routes continuing west towards Burry Port and Pembrey. For walkers, even a shorter stretch offers the chance to leave the town behind and spend some time beside the water.

And because the path passes through rather than around the surrounding communities, it is easy to combine the outdoors with the other things that make a day memorable: a good breakfast before you start, coffee after a long walk, or lunch before continuing west.

Explore the Coast Around Burry Port

Continue west from Llanelli and the route follows the coastline towards Burry Port and Pembrey. This part of the journey is about the coast itself. Wide views across Carmarthen Bay, long stretches of shoreline, and beaches make it an easy place to slow down, get out of the car, and spend some time by the sea.

Two beaches in particular are worth including in the route:

  • Burry Port Beach offers an easy coastal walk with open views across the bay.
  • Cefn Sidan Beach, a little further west at Pembrey Country Park, opens onto a vast stretch of sand and one of the most impressive coastal landscapes in this part of Carmarthenshire.

Walk for twenty minutes or stay for several hours. The point is not to rush from one attraction to another; it is simply to experience this part of the South Wales coastline properly before continuing towards Pembrey and Kidwelly.

Spend a Few Hours at Pembrey Country Park and Cefn Sidan

A little further west, Pembrey Country Park changes the landscape again. Here, woodland meets coastline. There are walking and cycling routes, large open spaces, activities for families, and access to Cefn Sidan — a vast stretch of sandy beach overlooking Carmarthen Bay.

You can easily spend several hours here: walk through the forest, cycle through the park, head towards the beach, bring the children, bring the dog, or simply find somewhere quiet and enjoy having nowhere else you need to be.

For visitors searching for things to do near Llanelli, places to visit in Carmarthenshire, or outdoor activities in South Wales, Pembrey Country Park is an easy addition to the day. It also fits naturally into a route from Llanelli towards Kidwelly, which means you do not have to choose between the coast, countryside, and history — you can have all three.

Continue to Kidwelly

From Pembrey, continue west and the character of the journey changes once again. Kidwelly is a historic town best known for Kidwelly Castle, one of the most striking medieval landmarks in this part of Wales.

After a morning beside the coast or walking through woodland, arriving at a medieval castle gives the day an entirely different dimension. That contrast is one of the pleasures of exploring Carmarthenshire: you can begin with coffee in a modern independent café, spend the morning beside the sea, walk across a beach, follow the coastline, and finish among centuries of Welsh history — all without travelling particularly far.

One Day on the Carmarthenshire Coast

If you are wondering how to put everything together, keep it simple:

  • Morning: Start in Llanelli and stop at BRECHDAN for breakfast, brunch, or speciality coffee. Then walk or cycle part of the Millennium Coastal Path.
  • Midday: Continue west along the coast towards Burry Port, stopping for a walk by the sea before heading towards Pembrey. From there, explore Pembrey Country Park and Cefn Sidan Beach — walking, cycling, spending time with the family, or simply enjoying a few hours outdoors.
  • Afternoon: Later in the day, continue towards Kidwelly and explore the town and castle.

Or reverse the route: visit Kidwelly first, spend the middle of the day at Pembrey and Cefn Sidan, follow the coast back towards Llanelli, and finish your journey there. And if you are looking for lunch in Llanelli rather than breakfast or brunch, BRECHDAN can just as easily become the middle or end of the journey rather than the beginning.

There is no perfect order. The best route is the one that gives you enough time to enjoy where you are.

Coming from Swansea, Cardiff or Further Away?

One of the advantages of this part of Carmarthenshire is how easily it can be added to a wider South Wales journey.

If you are travelling from Swansea towards West Wales, Llanelli is a natural point to leave the main route and explore the coast. Visitors coming from Cardiff can turn the journey west into a full day rather than simply driving through. And for anyone travelling towards Carmarthen or Pembrokeshire, this stretch of coastline can become part of the journey rather than somewhere passed on the way to somewhere else.

That is often how the best travel discoveries happen: you stop somewhere you had previously only driven past, and suddenly it becomes somewhere you know.

More Than the Famous Stops

South Wales has no shortage of places people already know they want to visit. But travelling is not only about collecting famous landmarks. Sometimes what stays with you is much smaller:

  • The view you found while walking.
  • The stretch of coastline where you stopped for twenty minutes and stayed for an hour.
  • The enormous beach you had not expected.
  • The coffee you still remember.
  • The meal everyone talked about in the car afterwards.

The places between the destinations are often what give a journey its personality. That is what makes the Carmarthenshire coast around Llanelli, Burry Port, Pembrey, and Kidwelly worth exploring. It does not ask you to rush. It gives you enough to build an entire day around — and enough space to make the day your own.

Make BRECHDAN Part of the Route

If you are planning a South Wales road trip, exploring the Carmarthenshire coast, walking or cycling the Millennium Coastal Path, visiting Pembrey Country Park or Cefn Sidan, heading to Kidwelly Castle, or simply looking for somewhere to eat in Llanelli along the way, BRECHDAN is easy to make part of the journey.

Come before the coast, come afterwards, stop halfway through, or meet here before setting off. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, or speciality coffee — the time of day matters less than having somewhere worth stopping for.

Because a good journey is rarely remembered as a list of destinations. It is remembered in moments. And sometimes one of those moments happens around a table.
